Lend a Shoulder Day

Supporters of the Big Shoulders Fund went back to school this fall at the 17th Annual Lend a Shoulder Day. It was a busy yet fun morning with many activities across grades, demonstrating how their support is helping the Big Shoulders Fund create brighter futures for students at St. Mary Star of the Sea School. In one activity, scarves and blankets were made for the homeless. A big thanks for all they do.

Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead )

Altar in the St. Mary Star of the Sea Office (submitted by Mrs. Liliana Aceves - M105 PreK mom)

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a time of celebration and remembrance of loved ones who have passed away, much like Memorial Day in the United States.

Creating Day of the Dead altars is one of the most important Day of the Dead traditions. Day of the Dead altars are created to honor the spirits of deceased loved ones. When Dia de los Muertos is embraced by the community, non-secular altars are also created in schools, government offices, and other community spaces.

Day of the Dead altars are set up at least two days leading up to Dia de los Muertos. Altars contain "offerings" for the dead, known as ofrenda. These include items such as:candles, fresh flowers or flowers petals (usually marigolds), photographs of the deceased, along with other memorabilia, the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased (lovingly-prepared),incense, water, sugar skulls, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), and statues of saints. Enjoy the show! (photos by Liliana Aceves)
