The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a time of celebration and remembrance of loved ones who have passed away, much like Memorial Day in the United States.
Creating Day of the Dead altars is one of the most important Day of the Dead traditions. Day of the Dead altars are created to honor the spirits of deceased loved ones. When Dia de los Muertos is embraced by the community, non-secular altars are also created in schools, government offices, and other community spaces.
Day of the Dead altars are set up at least two days leading up to Dia de los Muertos. Altars contain "offerings" for the dead, known as ofrenda. These include items such as:candles, fresh flowers or flowers petals (usually marigolds), photographs of the deceased, along with other memorabilia, the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased (lovingly-prepared),incense, water, sugar skulls, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), and statues of saints. Enjoy the show! (photos by Liliana Aceves)

Each month St. Mary Star of the Sea is visited by the Chicago Fire Department to have a fire evacuation drill. Today when Engine 88 came to SMS, they had a surprise visitor. Jackson, a boxer rescue dog, is the new mascot of our first responding rescuers! He has an amazing personality and is excited to make new friends. The fire fighters are blessed to have this new friend - he is blessed to have a new forever home.
